QUESTIONS?
Still have questions about giving? We'd love to talk with you! Call us at 303.471.9644 or email us at church@mtnvw.org.
We, who call Mountainview home, give generously to God through MTNVW, knowing that our money is used to go into the world and reach people locally and globally.
We believe that the decision to give to the church is more than a financial decision — it is first and foremost a spiritual decision. That’s one reason why we offering a variety of ways for you to practice generosity on a regular basis.
Why do we give?
That is a great question! Stewardship is a discipline to be developed, just like any other. Here are few reasons why we believe in giving to your local church:
Scripture tells us that the top competitor for our devotion to Jesus is money. Giving allows us to demonstrate that He is more important to us than material things. (Matthew 6:24)
You cannot out give God, so when you trust him with your tithes and offerings, know he will bless you in return. (Proverbs 3:9-10 & Malachi 3:10-12)
Christians should be the most generous people on earth and support worthy causes. There is no organization with more potential to change the world than the local church. (2 Corinthians 9:6 & Ephesians 3:10)
OTHER WAYS TO GIVE
Mountainview has a brokerage account at Wells Fargo and accepts stock gifts. Giving stock you have owned more than one year, and which has gone up in value, may provide a double tax benefit.
The increase in value is called appreciation and can result in capital gain income tax when the stock is sold. The amount taxable is typically the sale price less than your basis, which usually is what you paid for it. In other words, if you paid $1,000 for 100 shares of stock, and later sold it for $3,000, you would pay tax on the $2,000 increase in value. However, making a charitable gift of the stock can avoid the long-term capital gain income tax.
Additionally, the amount you can deduct on your income tax return is the entire fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift, up to 30% of your adjusted gross income of the year. The five-year carry forward of any unused deduction also applies. In the above example, the tax deduction would be $3,000, the value of the stock, rather than $1,000, the amount paid. This is in addition to avoiding the capital gain income tax.
If you are interested in donating stock, please contact Jill Bryant for more information. You should also consult your tax advisor to be sure it makes sense for you.
As a matter of stewardship, we encourage you to have a will or revocable living trust. Planning your estate allows your desires to be carried out when this life ends. It is one of those things that must be done to have your “house in order”. Planning is not just for the terminally ill or the elderly because life and health are unpredictable.
Consider a generous gift that will recognize the importance of Christian stewardship and provide funds for the Kingdom of God. Your will or trust can be a final statement and testimony of faith. A legacy of generosity truly recognizes “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” (James 1:17).
The most common ways are through life insurance policies and retirement accounts such as IRA’s or 401(k)’s. Your tax advisor will be able to help you properly set things up.
GIVING FAQ'S
While we believe that good financial stewardship involves giving back to God a portion of what has been given to us, there is no obligation or expectation for our visitors to give.
We believe that generosity is something that God wants for us and not from us. We are all on a journey of generosity, learning to freely give out of gratitude for all that God has given us.
As you prayerfully process where you are and what you give there are several ways to respond:
- Give Something – A portion of what you have.
- Give a Percentage – A portion of what you have on a regular basis.
- Give the Tithe – Literally meaning 10%, this is the Biblical expectation (Malachi 3:10).
- Give Sacrificially – There are instances and seasons when the Spirit leads us to give beyond the standard tithe.
- Helps hundreds of people hear the good news every weekend.
- Teaches children the basics of the faith.
- Trains students to be growing followers of Jesus.
- Starts new churches across South Denver.
- Supports missions partners across the world.
- Feeds hungry people.
- Helps people find hope and meaning that can only be found through Jesus.
A large number of us receive our paychecks via direct deposit and pay the majority of our bills online. In fact, we’ve been doing it for a long time. It eliminates the need for checks, envelopes, postage and time.
With online giving, you can schedule your tithes and offerings to be given weekly, twice a month, or at any interval of your choosing. This is the only area of our Christian life we can make automatic. Once you do, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
When you make a commitment to being a consistent giver it enables your church to plan effectively and it helps you build the discipline of stewardship.
Base your giving off percentages. The Bible teaches us that a tithe is the first 10% of our income. If that’s not immediately possible, pick a smaller percentage and commit to growing in your generosity.
As your financial situation improves, change your percentages to increase as well. Here’s what is exciting: Not only will your generosity change the lives of our neighbors, it will change your life, too!
